Hey, New Year,
Don't know what you heard about me from before but whatever you heard is already old news. I'm not here to carpe diem (seize the day); I'm here to carpe anno (seize the year). You see, I'm not the same person anymore. I've licked my wounds, learned my lessons, gone a little gray, but grown a lot wiser. In fact, I'm planning to show you a thing or two. With what is within my power, I will be responsible and fair. With what is in your power, I will be cool and calm.
All the years prior taught me that I cannot think only of the short-term. It's a long indefinite game, and I'm thinking ahead, not just for you but to all of your brothers and sisters after you. However, I do not regret what is already done. I won't start with you with any feelings of shame. I know you're brand new and our relationship is yet to be written. And look, I'm not kidding myself. I know I have no control over you, I only have control over me. But if I do my part and you do yours by giving me time, a lot can happen. And if enough people feel like I do, our collective actions can shape you. So don't get big headed.
Because this letter isn't really for you. It's for me. It's for all the people like me. We can do this. We have already overcome, and even you cannot control our actions. Whether you turn out to be a good year or not is based on us. It always has been. Then what must be overcome is ourselves, our short-sighted pettiness. We have the power, and it comes from the knowledge of all that has come before.
Like wine, finer over time, textured by experience and richened through empiricism. Vivid, confident, and understated.
Sure, you can send us some disaster, but you will also bring us the sun. It's about how we react to you that makes the best and worst years. It's the amalgam of all our actions and inactions that make the years count. And I plan to do my part.
